Brian Zick will lead scouts and venturers in converting Hill House’s collection of past newsletters into an electronic database available to all.
The project will take place during February break week, from 9-3 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Lunch will be provided.
Hill House (127 Mt. Vernon Street) is located just a few blocks down
Charles St. from the Charles/MGH stop on the Red Line. Click here for directions and map.
Brian describes the project as follows:
Hill House is the community center for kids in the Beacon Hill, Back Bay, West End and Charles-town neighborhoods. If any kid in that area wants to play sports or go to a day camp over the summer, Hill House is the place where they would do that. My self and Brian O’Rourke have played Hill House sports for at least 6-7 years each, if not more. In addition, Hill House chartered my Cub Scout Pack 74 before I crossed over into Troop 56.
Hill House’s collection of newsletters is of interest because it has a relatively large impact on the downtown Boston area and because Hill House’s 50th anniversary will be in 2016, not too far off. Having this collection of newsletters to examine at that time for anyone new to Hill House would be quite interesting. Furthermore, when I spent about 5 minutes in their room of newsletters I found a newsletter which included an advertisement from Troop 74 looking for youth who might want to go to Philmont that summer.
The work will involve a few people removing the newsletters from the binders they are in currently, a few sorting the newsletters by date, a few scanning the newsletters and a few renaming and sorting the scan files. The first day will be people working on all 4 parts of the process and the following days will have people working on what needs to be done.
