Trips 2016-17

Scouting Collective 56 goes on one outdoor trip per month from September through June. The 2016–17 Scouting year will culminate with a summer trip to Maine High Adventure (MHA) for a multi-day wilderness canoe trip. All monthly trips are open to all Scouts, but those planning to attend MHA must complete several requirements.

Maine High Adventure Requirements for Summer Wilderness Canoe Trip 2017:

1- Participate in the Community Service Trip (April trip)
2- Complete Wilderness First Aid Training (TBD, usually in March)
3- Participate in two qualifying canoe trips (September and June)
4- Participate in the formal trip shakedown (May trip on Memorial Day weekend)
5- Complete Canoeing merit badge/Watercraft Venturing requirement (spring 2017)
6- Provide a complete BSA medical form, signed by physician

2016–17 Monthly Trips

September 16-18, 2016: Canoeing on Charge Pond at Myles Standish State Forest
Canoe on Charge Pond on Saturday, camp overnight 2 nights at Myles Standish State Forest. Hike the grounds Sunday. Work on Scout skills for rank advancement.

October 8-10, 2016: SOAR On the Banks of the Charles River, Allston, MA
S.O.A.R.: Scouting Outdoor Adventure on the River. Over 250 activities, also open to the public. Hundreds of watercraft, zip lines, monkey bridges, climbing poles, fishing, tomahawks, etc. Event open to units from any Council, any state, any country. Campsites will be provided along the banks of the Charles River. Troops/Crews bring and prepare their own meals. Live entertainment on stage throughout the weekend, capped off with a fireworks display on Sunday night.

November 11-13, 2016: Turkey Roast at Hale Reservation
Travel to Hale Reservation in Westwood, MA, on Friday night. Hike and prepare a turkey roast on Saturday. Work on Scout skills for rank advancement. Camp Saturday night and return on Sunday. Families invited to participate — come for the weekend or just for dinner. Webelos and their families will be invited to participate.

December 3-4, 2016: Christmas Tree Sales

December 10, 2016: Boston Rock Gym, Woburn, MA
Spend a weekend day learning rock climbing skills, belay. Scouts not familiar with rock climbing are encouraged to do this if they want to go on ice climbing trip in February.

January 14-15, 2017: Cross Country Skiing at Windblown, Ipswich, NH
Leave Saturday morning. Ski all day with view of Mt. Monadnock in distance. Stay in shelter heated by potbellied stove.

February 3-5, 2017: Ice Climbing at Crawford Notch, White Mountains, New Hampshire
Climb ice formations, ranging from 40 to 60 feet tall, with guides from New Hampshire-based Synnott Mountain Guides. American Mountain Guides Association Rock and Alpine-certified, taking groups on similar expeditions since 1997. Armed with ice axes and crampons, ropes- belay.

March 4, 2017: Merit Badge University, Session 1

March 17-19, 2017: Geocaching & Orienteering Trip
Travel to Camp Sayre and do geocaching and orienteering activities with Merit Badge Instructor. Scouts who are interested could complete some of the requirements for the orienteering merit badge.
Tent camp Friday and Sat. night.

April 8, 2017: Merit Badge University, Session 2

April 28-30, 2017: Cape Cod Conservation Trip, Dennis Conservation Trust, Dennis, MA
The property contains upland, salt marsh, coastal dune, tidal flats, and tidal pools. Protecting the property would enhance over 200 acres of land owned by Dennis Conservation Trust along Chase Garden Creek Trail. Tent camp at Camp Greenough Scout Reservation, Yarmouth Port, MA. Mandatory trip for Maine High Adventure participants.

May 26-29, 2017: Canoeing Umbagog Lake State Park
NOTE: This Memorial Day Weekend Canoe Trip is OPEN TO ALL Scouts, but is REQUIRED for all Scouts signed up for the summer trip to Maine High Adventure.
Travel to Umbagog Lake State Park near Errol, NH (about 4 hours from Cambridge). Camp overnight at state park and national wildlife refuge. Canoe to remote camping site. Camp on lake one or two nights.

June 23-25, 2017 Canoeing on the Connecticut River, Vermont
TBD. Either: Canoe Upper Connecticut Watershed, put in just below Sumner Falls with base camp at Wilgus State Park OR Canoeing Connecticut River, Canaan to Moore Reservoir. Two-day trip following the most northern parts of the Connecticut River Paddler’s Trail.
